That said, it is important to sort your wedding photography as it determines how your memories can be stored. If you plan on taking engagement photos or pre-wedding pictures to put out on the invitations you will want to go ahead and plan those.
If you want famous photographers, you have to book them in advance as they are in high demand. Also, it will be a big part of this process so the early the better is a general rule for these things. Even if you are having a friend or relative take your photos, you need to be sure of their skills.
Here are some essential questions you need to ask your photographer to see if they are the right fit for you.

Will you be available for my date?
How far in advance do I need to book you?
How long have you been in business?
How many other weddings have you shot before?
What were the sizes of those other weddings?
How do you go about your work? Do you sit back and capture natural moments, or do you choreograph photos?
Is there a portfolio of your work to reference?
How are you different from other photographers?
What kind of information do you need from me about the wedding day?
Can I have a list of references?

Who will be shooting my wedding? If not you, then may I contact the photographer who will be present?
What kind of equipment do you use? Do you have any back up equipment?
How can I expect you to be dressed?
Are you familiar with the site? Are you planning on checking it out beforehand if not?
What will your schedule be like on the day of my wedding? (e.g. How early will you get there? Do you have other shoots on that day?)
Do you have an overtime charge?
Package, Proof and Prints
What packages or deals do you offer for my type of event?
Can I adjust the package or deal based on my preference or needs?
Will you provide post-picture taking edits?
What will the ordering price look like?
How long after I order the photos can I expect to receive them?
At what time during the process will I receive the written contract?
Is there liability insurance?
What is the refund/cancellation policy, if there is one?
Will there be an initial deposit? If so, when is it due and how much?
