Your wedding entertainment is important as some of the best memories will be made on the dancefloor. You need to find the right band/entertainment that fits your style of wedding, will take it over the top, adding another layer of personality with your taste in music that will bring your wedding to life.
The band or DJ should cover the bases when asked questions like; will they be able to play your favorite tune from your iPod? Will you need to provide extra electrical circuits? How many weddings or formal events have they performed at before? Asking questions like this will help you to choose the very best band for your wedding.
To begin putting your ideas in motion, you need to clearly communicate them with the entertainment company or band to ensure you are all on the same page. Here are some tips when it comes to choosing your wedding entertainment.
First, you need to identify the band or DJ you want to have for your wedding. You can get referrals from friends and relatives and also do your research before contacting them. After you contact them, you need to know if they will be available to play on your wedding day. This will be important to ask first so that you have time to find another band or DJ in the case that your first choice isn’t available.
Secondly, ask how long they have been together as a group or if it is an agency, you will be getting professionals so quality will not be an issue, also, you will need to ask about the number of wedding venues they have performed at and how many they do in a week. Having this information will tell you how fresh they will be if your date is on a weekend and if they will be accustomed to performing in a formal environment.
You can also ask for recent brides that the band or agency performed for, for quality assurance. Now it wouldn’t be an interview if you didn’t ask them why they are the best band/agency to book. If the answer is to your liking, the proceeding question would be to ask how many days or weeks in advance must you book them in order to secure their services.

The next set of questions will be after you’ve confirmed your interest in the band or agency and you’re ready to start talking numbers. The pricing will obviously be a factor so start by getting that out of the way, ask if the price includes setup and takedown in between the ceremony and reception locations. Their answer should include the deposit, when the deposit is due and when the final payment is due.
It is always good to ask about overtime charge (this goes for everything, not just the entertainment) or if they will do “continuous music” which usually counts as overtime. You will want to know when you can expect to receive the contract for them, which should include important things like the refund policy and liability insurance, so make sure you read it over carefully before signing.
Lastly, if you are planning to have them at your rehearsal you will need to know if that will be an extra charge.
After concluding the business aspects, you can get down to the fun part which is the music. If you are still unsure of their live capabilities or just want to know more about their performances, ask for a DVD or Youtube link of prior wedding performances.
Given that they have done weddings before, ask them what they recommend that they play for the processional, recessional and father-daughter parts of the wedding – as these will all require a unique style of music. However, remember to express your music taste so you can get customized options.
To be completely prepared, find out what kind of electrical requirements they will need and how you will go about acquiring them or will it be wireless? In case something was to go wrong with their equipment, make sure they have backup equipment. Ask how many performers there will be so that you can be sure your venue has the space needed to fit all performers and equipment. If you are wanting a certain song or style of music played sometime during the wedding via your own playlist, ask what the compatibility of their equipment is. And for spacing needs, make sure you know how many staffers they will supply for your event.
For questions that the band or agency can’t or will not be able to answer, for example questions about noise limits, music curfew, or electrical circuits, discuss these things with your site manager or vendor to make sure you are aware of any restrictions.
The performers will be a part of your wedding so make sure you know if they will have access to formal wear or if not, know what kind of attire they will have access to so you’re not thrown off by what they show up in.
Make note of the music that you are hoping to hear so that you can share this with the DJ or bandleader beforehand. It is your wedding after all, you will want to be clear on what songs you’re going to associate with your wedding memories.
